HOW DO ELECTRIC BIKES WORK?

The electric (or electric-assisted) bike is an emerging new category of
vehicle. Its design is based on the principle of augmenting,
not replacing human power.  Electric bikes are normal bikes with a
battery-powered electric motor which performs much better when you pedal.
The average person who normally rides at 10 mph can ride at
15-20 mph using the same effort. Electric bikes can go 20+ miles before
needing a recharge.

Rechargeable Batteries, LiFePo4 "Lithium Iron Phosphate"
Li-ION or  SLA "Sealed Lead Acid",
provide power to the electric drive hub motor.

The electric bike's ability to level out hills, cruise quietly with a minimum

Wanted to let you know how much I like the electric assist system  
that you installed on my  "Ice Tryke".  As you know I suffered a  
massive heart attack 2 years ago and lost 50% of my heart
function. I was having a hard time keeping up with my group rides
and they would always have to stop and wait until I was able to
begin again.. NOW..With my power assist I am able to keep up and
pass them if I choose :-)))))). I now get MORE EXERCISE and am able
to maintain a good pace and not wear myself out in the process.. I
have been tracking my amp hour usage and I have been averaging
about 6-7 miles per amp hour.. On our typical Mission Bay ride of 22
miles I can complete it using  2.2 amp hours!!!! I am so very happy
with your system and totally sold on the electric assist system on
my Tryke!!!!
I would be happy to share my experience with any and all of your

Hi Pat,

I wanted to let you know how much I LOVE riding
my trike!  It is an absolute blast!!   My ride into
work is now 40 minutes and home is 50
minutes.  What a difference for me!  I am not
exhausted when I get to work or when I get
home.  The effort is what I wanted - gentle
exercise instead of the exhausting ride it had
turned into.  I use the motor to get me up to a
good speed then pedal as hard as I want to
keep up at that speed, then boost my self back
up with the motor when I start to get slower.  
This will be a great way for me to build up my
strength and distance on pedaling without
feeling like I am riding myself to death.

Yesterday I rode up to a kid on his bike and he
said "Cool bike" and asked where I got it. I told
him. He said "How fast can you go?"  I told him
"As fast as I can pedal."  he bike and if I use it, I
can go really fast."  He wanted me to use it and
we raced along for a bit.  I think I impressed him
- or at least the motor did!

Pat,

This bike is the greatest.  After
what I consider long rides, it has
never taken over 45 minutes to
recharge. The instructions say it
could take up to 6 hours to
recharge. I go farther away each
time and doubt that I could ride
long enough to completely
deplete the battery. 1--1.5 hours is
my max.
Just to let you know.............I am a
happy customer.

I took a Mountain Bike with Front and Rear Suspension and  
converted it to an Electric Bike by a local Orange County  
dealer. He did a good job on a tough conversion, but the
bike just didn't match my idea of comfort & efficiency.  The
biggest problem was my bike went around 30 miles per
hour, but the gears weren't made to pedal above 18MPH,
So I was getting absolutely no workout.

Although San Diego Electric Bike was a two hour drive  
away, after talking to Pat, I felt that he was the man for the
Job & take out the rough edges, and make my bike perfect.
Pat impressed me with being very nice and helpful.

When I received my bike back and took a ride I was
absolutely thrilled. Brakes worked Perfect, Gears shifted
Perfect. He did a fantastic job & the difference was night and
day. My bike was converted to a BMW or Mercedes,
everything working together with precision!!! The
ergonomics of the control layout is just so sweet. I can shift
and accelerate at the same time.Same day service
too!! Another dealer might have taken advantage of me and
charged a lot more. I felt that he offered a great value and
most important did a tremendous job!!

Kudos to San Diego Electric Bike and Pat for completing my
project.     I have my dream bike now!!

Dear Pat:  I can't thank you enough for powering up my
Trike!  Dad lost his driver's license last year and resisted all
my efforts to get him to use the many bike trails in his town.  I
took my trike up to him, and it took him a few weeks to even
try it.   After the neighbors and I rode it enough to get him to
feel comfortable with it, he finally started using it, and it has
made a BIG DIFFERENCE in his outlook on life.  He rides to
the grocery store, to the cemetery to visit Mom, to the VFW
for dinners, and out for Dollar Burger night at the Mall.  He no
longer feels "trapped" in his house, and denied a little
freedom between visits from his kids. He now brags about his
